Best Coffee Shops in Tokyo

Even though tea might be the first beverage that pops to mind when speaking of Japan, their coffee offerings should not be overlooked! Here are my picks for the coffee shops in Tokyo that are well worth sipping. Your tea can always wait for your next meal!

Blue Bottle Café

For a phenomenal coffee and a uniquely mesmerizing view, head on over to the Shinagawa outpost of Blue Bottle Café.

This café was originally founded in Oakland, California, but it’s Japanese shop has the added bonus of watching a wave of Japanese business men and women walk to work.

This is one of the only coffee shops in Japan that seemed to serve gluten-free, lactose-free, and vegan/ vegetarian treats. So, if that’s something you’re after, give this place a try!

Café Kitsuné

Like the sister location in Paris, Café Kitsuné is a trendy, sleek, and cool place to grab a beverage during the day. Besides the coffee (which is good), the Tokyo location has a few drinks that are unique to this particular outpost.

One such drink is their strawberry milk. This sweet, refreshing drink is more like a smoothie rather than milk, so do be warned you will be full after drinking!

Streamer Coffee Company

Streamer Coffee Company has numerous locations all over Tokyo, and with good reason. Their coffees are made with care, and they have unique speciality drinks. One of their best? Their matcha latte with white chocolate!

The barista properly prepared the matcha beforehand with a whisk, before adding in the milk and white chocolate. They use high-quality ingredients, and it shows. I really, really loved this drink, and it’s one among the top 10 matcha lattes I’ve ever tried (I’m also a sucker for white chocolate, so that helped).

In terms of the ambiance, Streamer Coffee Company is definitely hipster heaven. It’s un-ironically trendy, and it definitely has an industrial vibe. The location in Harajuku had a few clothing items and art for sale, which were displayed throughout the café. I felt a lot cooler than I actually am just sitting in there (if you want proof, just look at the photos of me doing extreme posing below 😂).

Streamer is very work-friendly, and their are a number of outlets available in which to plug your electronics. Overall, a great café, and the matcha latte is definitely a matcha made in heaven (#sorrynotsorry).

Deux CafÉ Harajuku (Deus Ex Machina)

Part motorcycle shop/ part clothing stop/ part coffee shop, Deus Ex Machina definitely adds a unique touch to Harajuku. Even if you’re not in the mood for a drink, the gallery in the basement and the clothing/ motorcycle shops throughout the building make it an interesting place to visit.

In terms of the matcha lattes, Deus creates a well-made product that’s full of flavour, and that looks cute, to boot! I mean, just look at that bunny! Their matcha latte was incredibly flavourful, and genuinely tasted of matcha. It was clearly well made.

In the café itself, there were a lot of foreigners from Australia and France who were eating hearty looking brunch-style food (toast, eggs, etc…).

Deus Ex Machina is a great place to pop by after a busy day shopping on Takeshita-dori.

The Roastery by Nozy Coffee

Situated along the famed Cat Street, halfway between Harajuku and Shibuya station, lies The Roastery by Nozy Coffee.

This roastery boasts being a “speciality coffee” shop, and I must admit their blends were delicious. While Japan isn’t particularly known for their coffee scene, this is one particular café that does it’s best to prove that reputation wrong!

Alfred Tea Room

For all the tea and bubble tea aficionados out there, head over to Alfred Tea Room and enjoy yourself an aesthetic and sweet drink. This tea room’s original location is back in LA (Melrose Place, to be exact). Despite a similar interior to the LA shop (millennial pink walls, “Tea, yes, you, maybe.” sign, greenery everywhere), the offerings on the Tokyo menu are inspired by more traditional Japanese flavours. Think green tea, sakura, and other tempting mashups such as “rose garden milk tea”.

Tea, yes?

More like, tea, definitely!
