Boxcar Social (Coffee Shop and Cafe Reviews - TORONTO)
If a mad scientist fused together potted plants, smooth coffee roasts, bricks, a laissez-faire attitude, and a hefty amount of wood, they’d end up with the perfect recipe for Boxcar Social!
A cool café-cum-bar with four locations in the GTA (Summerhill, Harbourfront, Temperance, and Riverside), this laidback site boasts roasts and beers whose taste shine as brightly as the glossy finishes on their wooden tables.
Whether you’re popping in for your early morning macchiato with a paleo blueberry muffin, or you’re schmoozing your new Tinder date at night with a glass of whisky in hand, you can’t go wrong with any of their locations!
Bonus: Their Summerhill location offers free coffee “cupping” (tasting) every Saturday at 1:00 p.m. I will definitely be popping by for that at some point 😋 !
The Coffee
I’ve never had a bad cup of coffee at Boxcar Social (something a café should do properly!). They even make a decent matcha latte. I must say I am impressed by their consistently good latte art, and the black coffee cups help to display it perfectly.
The Food
I’ve had the pleasure of trying a number of their sweet treats. I was pleased to learn many of them are gluten free. There are options for those who are paleo, and vegan, as well.
I have listed my favourite (gluten free) food options they offer is ascending order:
The maple-custard cookie.
*I’ve only had this twice, and have not found it recently.
The carrot-cake muffin.
The lemon/ raspberry muffin.
The breakfast cookie
